Operation Hero Gets Closer to Goal

Simcoe County says Thanks to our Troops

BARRIE, May 28, 2010—Operation Hero has raised $120,000 of its $200,000 goal, thanks to overwhelming support from the community.

Launched by a group of local business and community leaders, Operation Hero is a campaign to fund a Georgian College scholarship for members of Canadian military families.

“This is a very generous community, and the campaign has received tremendous support,” says Honorary Colonel, Jamie Massie, CFB Borden, who adds “I am confident members of the community will get involved, and help us achieve our goal.”

The inauguration of Operation Hero will take place on Saturday June 5, 2010 at the Canadian Forces Day and Air Show at CFB Borden, where on behalf of all those who have contributed, representatives of the Base and Georgian College will award the first Operation Hero Scholarship to a family member of a soldier, sailor, airman or airwoman.

Everyone is invited to help make the educational dreams of a Canadian military family a reality by donating to Operation Hero. Donations can be made in any amount, small or large, with contributions of $1,000 or more receiving a commemorative Canadian flag. Massie says, the scholarship supported by businesses, the community, and Georgian College will provide education funding for families and dependants of our military and build stronger ties between CFB Borden and the surrounding community

Donations can be made online at www.operationhero.ca or by visiting Operation Hero’s Facebook page.

CFB Borden is Canada’s largest training base and home to almost 1,800 soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen posted as base staff and instructors with over 15,000 service men and women of all ranks rotating through the base annually for training.

Scholarship Eligibility

Military families of the Canadian Forces entering any full or part-time post secondary program at Georgian College are eligible for this scholarship. Preference will be given to family members of those currently posted at CFB Borden.
